Certain Image
There is no question that athletes need to maintain a certain image. It doesn't matter if they like it or not, but kids will try to be like them in some sort of way. Charles Barkley may not want to be a role model, but he doesn't really have a choice. As a kid I looked up to a lot of athletes and I tried to be like them when I played. For the most part athletes were good role models. It seems like today the attitudes of athletes and how they present themselves has changed drastically in the last 10 years. It would be a mess if athletes tried to be like T.O. or Plaxico Burress. Maybe the media is responsible, but athletes need to be role models, and today they aren't doing a good job.

I would agree that athletes usually are pushed into being a role model. However, if we look up to athletes or we looking up to them for their athletic skill or who they are as a person. Do we know enough about athletes personally to determine if they lead a lifestyle that we would want to follow?
ReplyDeleteI agree with Nik and Kyle that athletes are somewhat forced to be role models to young kids. I would defninatly agree with Kyle when he said that the athletes attitudes and what they do off the field makes us question their beliefs about being a role model for young kids. Thousands of kids want to be like A-Rod. Now what are they supposed to think about their favorite player\role model who just got caught using steroids? Everything professional athletes get in trouble for, is going to be put in the media and it's up for us to interpret what we make of the situation because we dont know the athletes personally.
