This is definitely a tough subject to know what is right and what is wrong. Even after watching the video today i don't really feel like what the Illini do is really disrespectful to them. I mean Charlene taught her kids to respect the eagle feathers and respect that person i don't know why she feels like that person should not be respected. I know he earned it for a different reason but in reality its not even her tribe. Every tribe is different and some are completely different in the way they carry out their ceremonies. That's the biggest problem i have with this situation because she is not even from the same tribe.

  1. Well you touch on an interesting topic Phillip. All tribes are not the same, but yet why are so many of these mascots supposedly all honoring same "traits"? Also she may not be from the same tribe, but are the people who are defending the Chief from any tribe at all?

  3. The thing I keep going back to is that the chief wasn't a real chief. He was a made up character for the university, and I believe his dance was made up as well. Granted I've never been in the same situation as the Native Americans, but I would not take offesne to a make beleive character. I also agree with Phil when he says this is a tough situation because you can't really know what does and does not offend people.

  4. Yes, there are different tribes all across the United States, but they are all Native American Indians, and when Illinois makes up a Chief and gives him a fake dance it becomes a mockery of all Indians. This helps create a stereotypical image of all Native Americans, and Charlene taught her kids to respect the feather, ceremony etc. because it was considered sacred to her, and I would be incredibly offended if something sacred to me was made in to half time entertainment.
