I think that athletes don't want to take political stances now days because they don't want off field issues to affect them on the field. They want to perfect what they can on the field, and off field distractions do not help their cause. I also think that there are not as many major political issues now days than there were back in the day. If I was a professional athlete, I would do the same and keep my mouth shut and focus on my job - on the field performance.

  1. I personally believe there are more in-depth political issues today than ever before. We have elected an African American president in this century and we are influenced everyday by the war issues, terrorism, discrimination and many many other issues. So to make my point, I believe that athletes do want to make a point and they do want to get more attention especially if they are not getting this attention on the field. For athletes to not know or have a stance on politics, that is their own personal choice but to say that we as a society are not influenced by the multitude of politics everyday is not correct.

  2. I would have to agree with emily that i feel as in todays society that there is more political issues then ever. But for an athlete to speak up is a big thing. Like Markus said it brings issues that they will have to take on as a player. They have so many things riding on there backs already adding polictial issues is a big thing. With todays media what ever they were to say will probably get turned around or some how make them look bad. if they look bad then it draws bad attention to there team. i feel as athletes dont want to risk these chances and just want to focus on what is at hand and that is there job. There job isnt polictics it is playing basketball, football, soccer wat ever it might be. They dont want to bring this unneeded attention to themselfs or to there club or team.
