I think that it is demeaning for a select number of schools to use, represent and none the less misrepresent a certain cultural group. I think that considering the fact that it is a name, it can be changed to show respect and courtesy. We are not changing a culture or a name of a long standing comprehensive group, it is simply a school name. I feel that in order for diversity to intertwine and develop in our society, all racial, cultural and unambiguous name calling needs to be used correctly and with respect. It is not just a name for the American Indian culture, it is history, values, beliefs that run deep and for many centuries. I think that respect by the schools should be upheld and they should chage their name/mascot. Also, I do not know the lines or the rules that need to be followed in order for a school to have a certain mascot or name but I do know that the names of schools should have been thought of with a little more direction instead of disrespect. Another idea is that, is this cultural identity theft if the culture does not mind a school being named after them? This is where the boundaries get a little sketchy because I think that if schools are being told to change and be more culturally competent than it should be changed across the board, not just for the select few groups that feel they have been disrespected in this way.
