After watching the rest of the video this morning I thought something interesting came up. When a few Native American people were talking about people dressed up as the Chief and cartoons of the Chief. I was a little surprised that they would almost prefer the cartoon logo as opposed to an actual person. I would feel if anything a logo such as the Cleveland Indians logo, would bring up more controversy because those can be tinkered with and really not represent what they looked like or were about. But seeing someone in a traditional outfit really upset that woman. If i were in those shoes i know that if i saw a drawing of my people in that way it may upset me a bit more than someone like the Chief at Illinois.

  1. I also found it interesting that she would have been more understandable if the mascot was dressed up in a cartoon figure like most mascots are. She said they (Native Americans) could have maybe laughed it off and tried to get over it, but since it was an actual person immitating their culture it was more of a slap in the face. I can kind of see where she is coming from when she said if it were a cartoon she could laugh it off, because that's what mascots are supposed to do, make people laugh and somewhat be the entertainment for fans.

  2. That is a bit strange that she would find a cartoon character less insulting than an actual person dressed up. The only thing I can think of is that since what they wear is considered sacred to Native Americans, then seeing it on a person who isn't Native American could be offensive to them. I agree that I think the cartoon would be more offensive, but I don't know much about their culture so I don't know what actually is offensive to Native Americans and what isn't

  3. That is definently a good point. You could think the all red skin and large nose of the Cleveland Indian, which is all stereotypical, would hurt the native americans more than somebody in an actual dress. I think this just shows how sacred there practices are and its something they cannot tolerate when they see it being made a mockery.

  4. I agree with Matt on that since they were wearing is considered scared to the them that is more offense then some cartoon thing. Because they grow up on what chief Illinwick was wearing to be somebody who earned it. By seeing them they know he didnt. I understand why they would rather see a cartoon figure. Like she said in the film atleast then you can laugh about it but i think when it is a actually person it makes a big difference.
