This is a very interesting topic to me. In my opinion she was not cheating or trying to cheat if she has all the physical characteristics that her culture taught her was normal than how would she know any different. I dont know exactly what she is or isn't but i don't think that this would ever happen to a man because he looked like a woman! The saddest part about it is all these tests are being done to her after she has already won the gold medal and they are not testing anyone else. If they were going to test her it should have been before the race and in private. And not just because she won and looks and talks a little different. Even if she was born intersex and then had surgery and was raised as a girl who may have never even known about it in the first place. Its wrong for her to have to find out this way. Testing should have been done prior and private.

I think this topic is very controversial. you obviously must sympathize with her as her privacy has been ignored and this story has been made into global news. I am not sure what did or did not happen and what her sex is or was but i agree that it is wrong for the media to be allocated such private information.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you both that this matter of testing should be done in private and it is wrong that she has to find out like this. I agree that it is wrong that they tested her because of the way she looks and talks, but I was wondering if you think it is wrong that they tested her because she won. I know that many times when an athlete male or female wins an event, especially by a large margin of victory that the athlete then must go under even more testing. I think this entire situation of testing this athlete not only creates conversation about her being a woman or not, but also shows how when someone wins a sporting event it is often assumed that they cheated.
ReplyDeleteI have to agree that this situation is completely wrong. Tests should have been done before she even began racing. I wonder if this would have happened if she didn't win the gold medal. I believe that since she didn't know about her situation prior then they shouldn't take away her medal. Her whole life she was raised and thought to be a girl. I feel like she did not take advantage of her situation and she was racing fairly, so she should keep her medal.
ReplyDeleteI'll be honest i watched this South African girl run her race and the first thing i thought about was that is either a guy or she is on steroids. I know that is not the way that it should be but I obviously wasn't the only one in the world to think that either. I feel that if this were a male in this situation it wouldn't have been as big a deal. I agree with the above posts about this being done in a private matter and prior to the athlete competing to possibly save embarrassment for her, the family, and the country. But I do hope that this athlete will be able to compete in the future again just because this whole situation is out of her hands. If she is able to compete again the right way to go is to have her compete with the other men in the world because of the way she was put together.
ReplyDeleteEverybody seems to be in agreement here by saying that it is unfair to test Caster because of her physical appearnce and her dominance on the track. However, if you were runner up in a race to Caster you might feel differently. The runners competing have trained their whole lives to race at a high level. I'm not saying that they have never cheated and I'm definitely not saying that somehow Caster cheated. However, track is very competitive and if there needs to be a test done to make sure the field of play is fair, then I see nothing wrong with that. However, this is a private issue and I don't believe the media should be all over this story, because it is not something to be spread around, for the sake of Caster.
ReplyDeleteI have no problem with them testing Caster. When it comes to any sport, I think all steps are necessary in determining if an athlete is cheating or not. For this instance, I wouldn't consider this cheating if Caster didnt know about her physical condition. But since there was spectulation about this subject I feel that it is appropriate to have Caster tested.
ReplyDeleteFor the future, about who Caster should compete against, I would say it depends on what she is legally viewed as, either male or female. That is up to the documentation and all the legal terms that goes with it.
