Blog for week of September 21st

This week we are going to do something a little different. The purpose of our blog is to generate more critical discussions of current events in sport. By talking with each other about different happenings in sport, I hope we can open up a lot of diverse opinions about our modern sporting word. There are two well known sport blogs who also have a focus on generating critical sport discussions. These sites are Dave Zirin's Edge of Sports, and sportsonmymind.com. The links are posted below. I want you to browse through these sites and then pick one story and make a post about it. I want you to discuss your opinion about what site you chose. Did you like the site, did you not. Then I want you to summarize the article you chose, and then discuss whether you agree or disagree with the author.

  1. I chose sportsonmymind.com over edgeofsports.com because it had more articles to choose from and I like how it had different things to explore into. Overall i thought it was a really good site and had alot of good information. I chose the article with Serena Williams losing to Kim Clijsters. In this article they talked about Serena's outburst and how the lines person claimed that Serena would kill her. My thought on this was how crazy the situation was and how everything happened, and they didn't let Serena finish the match out. So I agree with the author on this one. They couldn't let her finish the match and see what would've happened.

  2. I choose to read the article about LeGarrette Blount because I happened to watch that game and saw the events unfold live. Although I do believe the article presents the situation in an honest manner, I disagree with Blount's punishment. Suspending a player for throwing one punch is harsh. After he threw the punch he backed away and did not start an entire brawl. Also, it is obvious that he was being taunted and unpleasant words were exchanged and the player from Boise State did not receive any reprecutions from the incident. Also, the reporter from Oregon who said that he should be charged with assault is going way overboard. It is a typical example of how athletes are always in the limelight. When athletes do spectacular things the stories are written as if they are suppose to do such things, but when athletes slip up, make mistakes, get in trouble with the law, etc., the reporters make sure EVERYONE knows about it. If a man were to punch another man in public, the chances of him being charged for assault are very slim and would probably not even make the newspaper in the morning, much less the front page of sports like Blount's incident did.

  3. I chose to do mine on the article about LeGarrette Blount. This article was very well written and I do agree with the author almost completely. Being a big time running back in the NCAA last year, expecations were soaring for Blount this year. Having the first game of his season end like it did against Boise State probably put a terrible taste in his mouth. Having a player from the opposite team come up and taunt you like that Haut character did is bad enough, but if Blount's accusations were right and the fans added to that, I don't blame the guy for what he did. He probably could've settled it a lot differently, however. Instead of cold-clocking the guy, he could've gotten in his face and pushed him or something that might've given him a lot less punishment.
