My Opinion
In my opinion, I don't think this woman at all cheated in any kind of way. Now we all know, if she had looked more like a girl, there would have been no speculations of a gender issure. i think her appearance had more to do about where she is actually from and maybe her family back round. Maybe she has a history of family who are very cut up and in shape and she naturally looked like that plus her training. I think if the race was closer, there would have been no gender speculations. But because she beat all the other female racers so badly, there was automatically specualtion. I could only imagine how she feels right now going thru this situation because all her hard work is being scrutinized because of the way she looks.

One thing that is very interesting to think about is the fact that most of the time the athletes that win in our society are the ones that get tested. She clearly looks different and thats fine if they wanted to test her before the race because of that reason and in private that would be okay. But to have those concerns before she runs, and then just because she wins they choose to exploit her. I think she was the one who was cheated. She looked the same before the race as she did after she had one. Winning in our society is everthing. If she was a loser than nobody would care about testing her. Thats just how our society works.
ReplyDeleteI agree that her hard work and training is being scrutinized because of the way she looks. After looking at the pictures of her running and compared to other female athletes in the race I wondered if she would be questioned if her hair was longer and wearing a ribbon or if she was not wearing the long spandex shorts? Just because she looked and talked like a boy it made some people wonder if it was true. I personally think it’s putting her down as an athlete. She has worked hard and trained hard to get to this point where she can dominate the competition and because of this her gender is questioned.
ReplyDeleteGoing along with the "wearing a ribbon", it is now a social norm for women to wear ribbons. This distinguishes them from males but does it serve as the bottom line? It makes me mad and sad knowing that we as a society expect or need a women to be in the feminist category in order to recognize and/or associate with them. Grandite the fact her hair was short but realating to the fact that this was the hair style then. I still do not find any reasoning for "Fem Tests" because only 1 person out of all the exams has tested to be "fake", trying to play as a women.
ReplyDeleteThe one thing that I do not understand about this whole situation is that if they questioned her sex after the race, then why was it not questioned sooner? This person did not just show up out of no where and dominate her competition. There must have been some sort of preliminaries and other races that she has competed in. Why is it that all of a sudden she now is being tested? I think that there are a lot of stereotypes about her that make officials want to find out if she is for sure a female, but that does not mean that you have to violate someones privacy and put it in the media. I think that if they wanted to test her then so be it, but they could have at least kept it out of the media.
ReplyDeleteI'd have to go with philip k that it was wrong for them to exploit her testing the way they did. I mean they seen her before the race and everything why didn't they do them before. Now they ruined her life and everything she has done. At least if it was done before there wouldn't have been such hype because we wouldnt have known that she was going to win.
