me
When I heard today in class that women used to take sex tests, and in this case still do, I was very surprised. The logic really doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. I could understand that they are trying to protect men from competing in women's events put I couldn't imagine this would be a very popular thing for most males. I do thing that this is defiantly an instance of gender inequality because people never have suspicious of women playing men's sports, that would be ridiculous right... I do believe that how she looks defiantly played in a role in this decision because of her masculine characteristics. to me this brings up the question of transgender and intersexual athletes, what is there spot in sport? What about a women who used to have male organs? Must we place them in male sports because they used to be a male? The thinking of this article would probably keep a female to male change in women's athletics because of their origin. I dunno it is definitely a very difficult area of sport that I have never never really ever thought about before.

I agree.. I feel it is very unfair to subject her to fem tests to find out if she is male or female. I can't imagine growing up being a great athlete only to find out that I have internal testes which give me more male attributes... which would also possibly contribute to my athleticism. This would be an extremely difficult thing to accept in itself let alone having to consider possibly not competing against other females i the future and not being recognized as such a competitor among your own sex. I also believe if she is to be tested, every single competitor should be tested as well. However, there is some validity in questioning who she should compete against. Obviously she is a great competitor and head and shoulders above other females... does this mean she should remain in another category of athletes.... males? Is it fair for her to be in the female category? I honestly don't know the answer to that... as it stands, how she was treated and singled out was enough to convince me she should be allowed to compete against females in itself but there are other people to consider here as well.
ReplyDeleteI think it's interesting to read a females perspective on this topic because it makes it a bit easier to get it from the South African girls point of view. i can't even imagine going my entire life to find out that i have something in my body that isn't supposed to be there. I feel that this athlete should compete with men only based off of further tests that are being done. If they are in fact effective then she needs to go down the path of a male athlete, and if not then the path of a woman. But i do also agree every single athlete, world class or not should be tested to avoid big situations like this .
