Sports Journalists

Sports journalists are supposed to present sports information to us with an unbiased view. I think it's a very hard thing to do. For the most part, the athletes that are written about are the ones doing shocking things- the public likes to hear about extreme news... so when an athlete does something that really stands out- we hear about it. I don't necessarily think that sports writers are "making" us form opinions about certain players, but it seems like a large majority of them have their "favorites". There is nothing more annoying than having to listen to a sportscaster ramble about a player or team that they just can't get enough of. And going along with what's currently being discussed in class, I think that we could definitely use a little more diversity in the sports media world. It was nice to read the article on the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders. It took an ideology that the majority of sports fans seem to hold about cheerleaders being ditsy, dumb girls who don't know anything into the opposite by pointing out that the football players were in this case the "dumb" ones.

  1. Maddie, you picked up on one of the things I was hoping people would catch onto with that article. It helps dispel the stereotype that cheerleaders are not smart, but at the same time it perpetuates the notion that football players are dumb, which is another stereotype. This becomes more problematic when you think that the NFL is over 70% African American, and prolific stereotype about them is they have athletic skills, but no intelligence. This is the type of reading of sport that I hope we can start to do.
