I think people probably do care more about sports than politics. The reason for this is because many more people feel the impact of sports on their world than politics. further, growing up you are surrounded by ideas and participation in sports. No parents sign their kids up for 10 year old politic debate club, hence there is more interest in today's youth for politics. When you step back and look at it though it really is a shame because our politics will play a much larger role in our lives over our life time than any sporting event or game but like i had said this just isn't how we are raised. Our society doesn't place importance of politics rather it does sports. I have still yet to vote in any election in my life just because i don;t know the issues or the "politics" involved. Until this year i didn't really care until i started to think about graduation and taxes etc. and how much the governmental policies truly play a role in my life. Who cares who wins the rose bowl, how am i gunna afford to pay for taxes and the tv bill to watch the game?

  1. Great point. I growing up very few people think about going in to politics, so to begin with not everyone has participated in politics the way most have played sports. Another good point is that you seem to care more about politics when it affects you more.

  2. To further what you both said kids are not being taught the significance of politics in school. It is hard to teach a kid that politics are important and one day politics will greatly affect that kid’s life. I didn't take a political type class until my senior year in high school and did not think much of it either. It wasn't until I came to college that politics played a more vital role in how I viewed certain aspects in society, such as money. With that said sports has always been a huge part of my life whether it be competing, watching, or analyzing.

  3. I definently agree with your point about politics being a larger part of our lives in the long run than sports. We talked today in class about how this issue varies from age group to age group, but in the end the society around us is shaped by politics and if we are not interested and educated in them we will not be able to express our personal opinion. Like Nik said, a Democracy only works if the people use it, and it is our job as United States citizens to exercise our right to participate in our government.
