The last two weeks we have discussed nationalism and sport, and viewed two films in which sport in some shape or form was used as a vehicle for nationalistic expressions. Earlier in the semester we had a discussion in which numerous people expressed they believe many people care more about sport than politics. I would like this to be the focal point of our discussion this week. What do you think? Do people care more about sports than politics? What are politics? If so why do you believe that to be true? Is this problematic if this is the case? Additionally, we have discussed many instances this semester where "politics" have been involved in sport, what does this say about notions that politics and sport are two separate things?
I have a lot of thoughts about this particular issue, however, I would like to see where you guys end up with this. So instead of posting my own thoughts this week, I am going to post some quotes that come to mind when I think about this issue.
We don't need no education
We dont need no thought control
No dark sarcasm in the classroom
Teachers leave them kids alone
Hey! Teachers! Leave them kids alone!
All in all it's just another brick in the wall.
All in all you're just another brick in the wall.
"Wrong, Do it again!"
"If you don't eat yer meat, you can't have any pudding. How can you
have any pudding if you don't eat yer meat?"
"You! Yes, you behind the bikesheds, stand still laddy!" (Pink Floyd)

For me personally i grew up paying attention to sports like all of my friends did and family members did. I never really got into watching debates and reading articles on those certain topics. Like we talked about earlier in the semester about how much coverage is given to sport. I don't really remember the exact numbers but the amount of pages devoted to sport in newspapers is considerably more than any other section within the paper. Although that is how i've grown up i don't think that it is the best thing, politics can determine so many more things and it is very important. People need to be more aware of things that can directly effect them instead of knowing the score to the Bulls game or something like that.
ReplyDeleteI also think that politics become more important with age as it directly impacts an individual. It would be hard for someone that doesnt have to deal with things such as budget cuts or taxes to feel the direct impact that some political campaigns push so hard.
ReplyDeleteI think in a way people do care about sports more then politics. Especially in today's society. It is full of young people who were mostly grown up on a government that wasn't that good when they were growing up so they looked to other things. A lot of the kids where gettting into sports. I feel that the kids care more about how many points were scored by there fav. player then a law that has been passed.
ReplyDeleteI believe politics is a form of law that they give people. People that tell you what to do. A lot of people do not like those things. So they turn to things they do like, such as sports. They get to choose there fav. team, fav. players, just about everything. Nothing is picked for them they make there own decisions.
I do think this is a problem b/c people dont know what is going on around them. They need to look at all angles and see things different.
